NATIONAL PARKS, Natural Treasures

Ethiopia has some of the most magnificent National parks and Wildlife resources in Africa, which have Both National and Global Value. Each national park and the protected area offers something unique from the highland to lowland parts of the country.

The bio-geography of Ethiopia is characterized by four distinct regions: Highland, Rift Valley, Western lowlands, and Eastern A rids Areas. The extensive highlands of Ethiopia are unique in Africa and home to a high proportion of endemics. The Rift Valley is arguably better developed in Ethiopia than in any other African Country: it contains spectacular land escapes, lakes, and forests with highly diverse communities of plants and Animals and many volcanic features.

The western lowland includes a large migratory population of white-eared kob which migrates to Ethiopia from Boma National Park in South Sudan and so many. Approximately half a million animals may migrate making the second only to the Serengeti wildebeest migration in terms of the number of African ungulates migrating. The Eastern Arid Areas including the Ogaden with a high number of endemics species in these ancient arid areas.

The Ethiopian highlands contain four protected areas including Bale Mountains National Park and Simien Mountains National Park, Guassa, and Abune Yoseph Community conservation area. The western lowland parks including Gambela National Park with its migratory ecosystem.

Wildlife Tourism Circuits

 Each of the Ethiopian National parks and protected areas offer something unique and the wildlife circuits include many of the country’s flagship parks. From the dramatic landscape and highlands to lowlands 350 feet below sea level and with excellent transport links within the country, it is easy to combine several national parks in one wildlife circuit.

 Southern Eastern Wildlife Circuit;

The southern Eastern wildlife circuit (SEWCP)is which connects a number of protected areas. It is being developed with the assistance of the Frankfurt Zoological Society to promote the Bale Mountains National park as a Tourism destination .here there’s a chance to see five of the unique seven. there are two routes to access the SEWC; the first takes travelers south down the central Rift valley lakes, accessing Abijata -Shalla National Park and then Senkelle Hartebeest sanctuary .from there the route turns east to Bale Mountains National Park before returning to Addis Abeba . the second route takes the visitor eastwards from Addis Ababa across the Rift Valley to Awash National Park that remains a popular Wildlife destination and then beyond it to Alledeghi wildlife reserve  (AWR) which provides better opportunities for viewing many game Animals.AWR has good numbers of Beisa Oryx, Sommering’s Gazelle, Gerenuk, and Lesser Kudu. It Provides critical habitat for the endangered Grevy’s Zebra.

In addition, a few African wild asses have recently been seen there . the route turns south into the Mountains towards the astonishing gorges of Wabe Shebelle and the Marvelous Mountains scenery of western Hararge Dotted By scrubland, this route takes you to the miraculous ancient Shrine of Dire Sheik Hussein .from there, visitors travel through the Gubayeu Mountain to the largest caves in Africa. the next destination is the  Bale Mountains, National Park. an additional option is to Visit the isolated Gerale National Park and the untouched south -Eastern part of Ethiopia where there is a chance to see Prince Ruspoli’s Turaco.

The second route would take some 7 to 10 days, depending on the time spent at each attraction.
